In 2015, Pope Francis made a state visit to the United States in September. I was commissioned by Diocese of Peoria and the Archdiocese of Miami to cover the historical events that would take place in Washington, D.C. I covered the pope’s arrival at Joint Base Andrews where he was greeted by President Barack H. Obama, the canonization Mass of Junipero Serra at CUA, and his speech to Congress at the U.S. Capitol. It was an honor to witness the history-making events of the first canonization on U.S. soil and the first papal address to Congress within its chambers.
