Veterans Day 2015

November 11, 2015

My first time photographing Veterans Day in the Washington, D.C. area was in 2011. Since that time, I’ve gone through the various military monuments along the National Mall and Arlington National Cemetery to document what goes on there. Each year, I’m impressed with the dedication our uniformed men and women as well as their families have to visiting these places and honoring their fallen comrades. There is a very high level of respect, reverence, and comradery these war fighters share.

Few things bond like love and war … or is it love in war? Love despite war?

Our combat veterans have the rare and in some ways the unenviable task of laying down their lives for their fellow man, even those they don’t know: the citizens. The names on the walls, the wheelchairs, flowered wreathes, and TAPS carried on the breeze are reminders that our freedom isn’t free. It’s price that can be seen in those chiseled names, those who served with them, their families, and the gravitas of that sacrifice they bear.
